Introducing the Tofu bacon BLT

This is an all-time favorite of every kid and teen that has ever been to our house – in other words, it’s tried and true. Even non-vegetarians love it. BLTs are a natural with these, but don’t forget that they make a great addition to salads, quiches (yes, think quiche lorraine!), and as a topping for soups.

8 oz pre-pressed or firm tofu

1 T oil plus non-fat cooking spray

3 T nutritional yeast flakes

2 T soy sauce

1t liquid smoke

Slice tofu into 1/8” pieces about the width of bacon. Heat the oil in a skillet preferably non-stick and cook tofu slices over medium –low flame until golden brown and crispy on one side. Flip and cook the other side until browned.

The tofu should be very brown and crispy. Sprinkle with nutritional yeast, then add the soy sauce and liquid smoke, and stir quickly to coat the tofu slices evenly

Cook for another moment and then serve.

I finally made this recipe. I assembled the sandwich, plated up my dinner and sat down to eat it..remaining very skeptical.

First bite...I couldn't believe how delicious this was. I was simply amazed at how it tasted just like bacon. It wsa so good, I ate a second sandwich.

Thank you Miyoko for sharing such a great and delicious recipe!!!

Unfortunately, every time I use liquid smoke, I end up with a migraine. Has anyone tried this recipe using a smoker instead of liquid smoke? Or using smoked salt (not smoke-flavored salt) in place of the soy sauce and liquid smoke? Thanks!

I just made this, and OMG - it is incredible! It is really a great substitute for bacon. My only caveats: use a really sharp chef's knife to cut the thinnest slices of tofu, and use a little less soy sauce and a little more liquid smoke than the recipe lists.

Thank you so much for such a great recipe.

I never would have believe that tofu could be C-R-I-S-P.  What a incredibly delicious substitute for bacon. Thanks so much for your creativity!  I am totally WOW'ed.

Well, I gave smoking a try. I used Wildwood sprouted extra firm tofu that I pressed. I then sliced the tofu into ⅛' slices. The thinner the slice, the more the flavor permeates the tofu. I used 1T hickory chips. Some of my stovetop smoking books advise against using hickory with tofu because it overpowers it but I wanted that taste so I thought I'd try with half the amount of chips I usually use.

While it was smoking, I put te oil, soy sauce, nutritional yeast in a small container and mixed it thoroughly. When the tofu finished smoking, I rubbed the soy sauce mixture all over the tofu. I put it in my Airfryer.

OMG, it was so good!! It was the closest anything has ever come to tasting like bacon. Thank you so muc, Miyoko. You rock!!

I don't like liquid smoke, so I just made it without it. Tasted DELICIOUS - and sure enough, my kids loved it too. In fact, one of them is a about to make it himself. :-)
